Ladies in the Workplace Abstract Paper Unique Issue: Gender segregation/pressures are still predominant in todayââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"equal society. â⬠Although numerous individuals accept sex separation is generally a relic of times gone by, it is as yet existing as an undetectable hindrance in one of the most unmistakable everyday issues: the work environment. This paper will examine word related sexism and itââ¬â¢s consequences for American perspectives. In American mainstream society, ladies are seen as charming and sweet, abstractly positive characteristics that suit them to hearth and home, yet in addition as excessively passionate and deficiently consistent to achieve crafted by the world. I accept that despite the fact that movement has been made toward generally speaking sexual orientation value, the fight is a long way from being done and should proceed. Reason: By joining realities and measurements from fluctuating sources, for example, the Wall Street Journal, I intend to show my crowd that notwithstanding extensive advancement throughout the last 25 years, ladies laborers are as yet seen as less equipped than men. Impediment: I accept that the greatest obstruction that may meddle with my expressed design is the reluctance to change. Additionally, I feel that the male-overwhelmed work environment will be reluctant to give up the rules of the American wilderness. The crowd probably won't concur with my motivation for a couple of reasons. Some may feel that the movement made over this past 25 years is fine the manner in which it is. Others may immovably accept that a womanââ¬â¢s place is in the home. There are numerous conceivable peripheral reasons why my crowd probably won't concur with my position. Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla essays
Godzilla versus Mechagodzilla expositions Realistic researchers have contended for quite a long time over which is this greatest, meanest, and coolest beast ever. Given the decision of Godzilla or Mechagodzilla: the vast majority would pick the radioactive reptile over the space robot, in light of the fact that Godzilla won against Mechagodzilla. What these individuals neglect to acknowledge is that Godzilla had an unjustifiable favorable position in that fight. The two titans battled with all their capacity and when they arrived at an impasse, Godzilla enrolled the assistance of King Seeser the 120 meter hound like beast. While Godzilla held Mechagodzilla down, King Seeser beat the robot into accommodation. I have spent quite a while thinking over who might win in a reasonable battle. In spite of the fact that they appear to be an equivalent match, the two beasts have totally different characteristics. The two beasts have an attempt at manslaughter style of battling. Godzilla can move undetected in the water. This leaves him the alternative of shocking his rival or making a snappy retreat when fundamental. Godzilla may have his stunts, yet in the territory of moving, I offer praise to Mechagodzilla for one explanation. Mechagodzilla can fly. Flight empowers him to assault or retreat at extraordinary speed, just as making him a hard objective. Godzillas cumbersome reptile manner is no counterpart for Mechagodzillas fly like speed. Protective quality is another significant factor in a skirmish of galactic extents. Godzilla and Mechagodzilla can both endure a shot. Godzilla has thick and extreme skin. Regardless of whether something were to puncture his protection like scales, he has the one of a kind capacity to recover. On the off chance that you hit Godzilla, he sucks it in and continues battling. Mechagodzilla was planned by outsiders utilizing space age metals and is essentially indestructible. Robots dont know the significance of the word torment. On the off chance that you hit Mechagodzilla, he feels nothing and continues battling. Sadly, Mechagodzilla can't recover, which leaves Godzilla with the guarded edge. ... <!

Monomyth Cycle in Star Wars Free Essays
The once there was a galaxy far far away where one man had to learn about becoming a hero and finding himself through his journey. You may know of this story because there was a clue in the first sentence. Yes, this is the story of Luke Skywalker and his journey to become a Jedi knight. We will write a custom essay sample on Monomyth Cycle in Star Wars or any similar topic only for you Order Now However, you may not realize that during the filming of Star Wars IV, the director worked very closely with Joseph Campbell. What is a mythologist doing on the set of one of the greatest science fiction of all time? Well Luke experiences what Campbell calls the Monomyth Cycle, during the movie. While Luke followed this path there were some relevant parts of the cycle that defined him the most. When he crosses the threshold into his 2nd world, Luke finds himself lost in a new world. During his road of trials, Luke finds his purpose through the tasks he must perform. Lastly, Lukeââ¬â¢s efforts to join the Dark side are being planned to ruin the universeââ¬â¢s hopes of freedom. Crossing the threshold is when the hero first crosses into the second world, which is unknown to him. Luke is seen here as a man who left his friends in hopes of completing his mission to become a Jedi knight. He leaves the ice planet of Hoth and leaves for Degoba where he is to meet the great Jedi master Yoda and learn from him. This step according the Campbell is to be very rocky transition into the heroââ¬â¢s new world. And likewise, Luke crash lands on the unknown planet of Degoba and at first sight the planet is a dense forest with unknown creatures. Immediately after he lands and dismounts from his ship, R2-D2 is eaten by a sea monster but soon returned to Luke. While trying to fix R2 Luke first a weird green alien, who helps Luke find shelter in his hut. Luke urges the alien that he must meet with master Yoda and finds that the alien is actually Yoda. Immediately Luke feels he is ready to become a Jedi but Yoda informs Luke that his father was reckless and he was powerful (Star Wars V). Luke feels disheartened but he is determined to become a Jedi at any cost. Luke finally finds the master and planet he was looking for but Yoda tells him that he will gain fear through his training. During the road of trials the hero must overcome obstacles in order to find his place in the new world. In Lukeââ¬â¢s case, he meets master Yoda and must learn to become a Jedi in order to save the universe. In his first task Luke must overcome and become physically fit in order to train his mind from succumbing to evil. Luke passes this task with ease with Yodaââ¬â¢s guidance. The second trial was when Luke entered the cave on Degoba where he faced his worst fear. He sees Darth Vader and then slays him but he sees himself as Vader and finds that his worst fear is to join the Dark side. Then Luke must learn to use the force because the force is a Jediââ¬â¢s life essence and a true Jedi can manipulate the force to work to his needs. His third trial trains him to lift stones, clear his mind, and focus while using the force. However, he learns that the force can give him the sight to see the future the present and past. This scares Luke at first because he sees his friends in peril and he chooses to help them. When Yoda and Obi-Wan persuade him to stay and finish his training, he agrees but when Luke learns to use the force with more ease, his next trial is the get his ship that had crashed when he landed in Degoba (Star Wars V). Yoda informs him that the force can help Luke get his ship back, but only if he can focus. He fails because he thought of the ship being too big for the force to move it. The next trial he must go through is to complete his training on Degoba but he fails to become a true Jedi and leaves Degoba (Star Wars V). Through this step in Lukeââ¬â¢s cycle you see the hardships he had to overcome. Throughout the movie Darth Vader and Darth Sidious are formulating a plan to force Luke into the dark side of the force and be used as an extension of the Empireââ¬â¢s power over the universe. This is first seen when Sidious tells Vader to try to turn Luke to the dark side and be used as an asset to the empire and the Emperorââ¬â¢s power. Vader follows Luke throughout the movie to get in direct contact with him but he realizes that Luke will only face Vader if Lukeââ¬â¢s friends are in danger. Vader goes to Cloud City and holds Lukeââ¬â¢s friends captive until he receives word that his prey has finally come to him. Luke battles his way through the invaded city and to the chamber where he meets Vader. In the final battle with Darth Vader Luke is constantly asked to join the dark side and Vader finds himself trying not to kill him. During the battle Vader tells Luke that his place in the new world is with Vader and Emperor and that only Lukeââ¬â¢s hatred can destroy Vader (Star Wars V). A Jedi must never hate or love because it is the path to the dark side (Star Wars III). Some archetypes appear in this part of the movie where Luke is clothed in white and is seen as the hero and Vader is seen as a shadow in all black and the temptress. After Luke gets his hand cut off, Vader tells Luke that if Luke joins him in the Empire he can complete his training and begin his reign. Vader further tells Luke that he can kill the Emperor and rule the universe alongside him as ââ¬Å"father and sonâ⬠(Star Wars V). After reviewing the preceding evidence it is clear that Lukeââ¬â¢s journey in his Monomyth Cycle had defining steps that showed him new worlds, tested him and was tempted by evil. During Lukeââ¬â¢s rocky entrance into his new world, Luke finds himself in peril early but escapes. He meets a green alien that will teach him to become a Jedi and be able to become a new hope for the universe. During his road of trials Luke proves to Yoda that he is too weak to become a Jedi even though he faces his fears of joining the dark side, clearing his mind, and focusing on using the force. Luke chooses his friends over completing what he sent out to do. Lastly, in the final battle of the movie Luke is tempted to join the dark side or die with hopes of controlling the universe with his father and killing the Emperor to do so. Throughout the fifth installment of the Star Wars series, Luke goes through the Monomyth cycle in order to find himself and defeat the evil in him. How to cite Monomyth Cycle in Star Wars, Papers

ToK language essay Example For Students
ToK language essay However, since we know that other animals such as chimpanzees and gorillas also use tools, we cannot yet begin to speak of humanity as we know it. It was not until our brains were developed enough to be able to generate emotions that we could speak of human society and of human culture, accordingly. With emotion came the blueprints of society; early men and women were now able to bond with other members of the species in ways that were far beyond the merely symbiotic hunter-gatherer groups. From this moment on we gained the ability to acquire knowledge. We will write a custom essay on ToK language specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now There are some who argue that since communication between individuals was present when these early societies started to form, language was too and so, consequently, it was really language and not emotion that paved the wave for human culture. However, these people forget that language is really the complex system of human interaction. These early forms of communication were extremely primitive in comparison even to those of ancient civilizations, and thus cannot be classified as language. For early humans it was really only a matter of combining their current reasoning and emotive capacity. Even nowadays, if I was thinking I like you, therefore I will give you this apple, it would require no more than using emotion to determine how I feel towards someone and reason to decide what to do next. However, if I want to casually quote Hamlet and think There is a divinity that shapes our ends, rough hew them how we will, it would be almost impossible to do it without a far more complex way of organizing concepts and ideas. Hence, the extent of our language serves the purpose of allowing us to express more complicated ideas. It is then that language itself becomes critical. So far, we have seen how language is not a cause but a consequence of culture and how its extent, while not essential for human interaction, it is needed to express multifarious notions. Yet, at the same time, its type appears to be irrelevant according to Chomskys theory. The next assertion, however, will prove him wrong. A remote Australian aboriginal tongue known as Guugu Yimithirr is very peculiar in that instead of utilizing words like left or right, they rely on cardinal directions such as north and south7. Thus, not only would this contradict Universal Grammar, since saying left and right is proven to be words that define our concept of space (an vital element of our view of the world), but it would also mean that anyone that hadnt been born into a society that uses the cardinal points in this way would not be able to communicate with the members of said society. Without communication, one cannot understand the culture. Hence, one can never view the world in the same way. In other words, our language type can be limiting. In conclusion, language is the evolved offspring of the communion between our reason and our emotion. It was created simply out of both need and utility, since it is easier and only possible to express more complex ideas through it. It is also self-limiting because of this, since when something is created out of utility it is dependant on the needs of a society which are in turn dependent on a large number of environmental factors such as geographical location or climate. This creates situations such as the one seen when discussing Guugu Yimithirr, where the language depended on the individual knowing the cardinal points, a resource that transcends their linguistic capacity.Language is limiting; hence, its extent and type defines our knowledge of the world. .u77b3d72cf695131afa03c4738b49347f , .u77b3d72cf695131afa03c4738b49347f .postImageUrl , .u77b3d72cf695131afa03c4738b49347f .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u77b3d72cf695131afa03c4738b49347f , .u77b3d72cf695131afa03c4738b49347f:hover , .u77b3d72cf695131afa03c4738b49347f:visited , .u77b3d72cf695131afa03c4738b49347f:active { border:0!important; } .u77b3d72cf695131afa03c4738b49347f .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u77b3d72cf695131afa03c4738b49347f { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u77b3d72cf695131afa03c4738b49347f:active , .u77b3d72cf695131afa03c4738b49347f:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u77b3d72cf695131afa03c4738b49347f .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u77b3d72cf695131afa03c4738b49347f .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u77b3d72cf695131afa03c4738b49347f .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u77b3d72cf695131afa03c4738b49347f .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u77b3d72cf695131afa03c4738b49347f:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u77b3d72cf695131afa03c4738b49347f .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u77b3d72cf695131afa03c4738b49347f .u77b3d72cf695131afa03c4738b49347f-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u77b3d72cf695131afa03c4738b49347f:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: To what extent is language necessary for thought? Japanese Writing for Beginners
Japanese Writing for Beginners Writing might be one of the most difficult, but also fun, parts of learning Japanese. The Japanese dont use an alphabet. Instead, there are three types of scripts in Japanese: kanji, hiragana and katakana. The combination of all three is used for writing. Kanji Roughly speaking, kanji represents blocks of meaning (nouns, stems of adjectives and verbs). Kanji was brought over from China around 500 C.E. and thus are based on the style of written Chinese characters at that time. The pronunciation of kanji became a mixture of Japanese readings and Chinese readings. Some words are pronounced like the original Chinese reading. For those more familiar with Japanese, you might realize that kanji characters do not sound like their modern-day Chinese counterparts. This is because kanji pronunciation is not based on modern-day Chinese language, but the ancient Chinese spoken around 500 C.E.à In terms of pronouncing kanji, ththere are two different methods:à on-readingà andà kun-reading. On-reading (On-yomi) is the Chinese reading of a kanji character. Kun-reading (Kun-yomi) is the native Japanese reading associated with the meaning of the word. Learning kanji can be intimidating as there are thousands of unique characters. Start building your vocabulary by learning the top 100 most common kanji characters used in Japanese newspapers. Being able to recognize frequently used characters in newspapers is a good introduction to practical words used every day.à Hiragana The other two scripts, hiragana and katakana, are both kana systems in Japanese. Kana system is a syllabic phonetic system similar to the alphabet. For both scripts, each character typically corresponds with one syllable. This is unlike kanji script, in which one character can be pronounced with more than one syllable.à Hiragana characters are used to express the grammatical relationship between words. Thus, hiragana is used as sentenceà particlesà and to inflect adjectives and verbs. Hiragana is also used to convey native Japanese words that do not have a kanji counterpart, or it is used as a simplified version of a complex kanji character. In order to emphasize style and tone in literature, hiragana can take the place of kanji in order to convey a more casual tone. Additionally, hiragana is used as a pronunciation guide to kanji characters. This reading aid system is called furigana. There are 46 characters in hiragana syllabary, consisting of 5 singular vowels, 40 consonant-vowel unions and 1 singular consonant. The curvy script of hiragana comes from the cursive style of Chinese calligraphy popular at the time when hiragana was first introduced to Japan. At first, hiragana was looked down upon by educated elites in Japan who continued to used only kanji. Consequently, hiragana first became popular in Japan among women as women were not granted the high levels of education available to men. Because of this history, hiragana is also referred to as onnade, or womens writing.à For tips on how to properly write hiragana, follow these stroke-by-stroke guides.à Katakana Like hiragana, katakana is a form of Japanese syllabary. Developed in 800 C.E. during the Heian period, katakana consists of 48 characters including 5 nucleus vowels, 42 coreà syllabogramsà and 1 coda consonant. Katakana is used transliterate foreign names, the names of foreign places and loan words of foreign origin. While kanji are borrowed words from ancient Chinese, katakana is used to transliterate modern-day Chinese words. This Japanese script is also used for onomatopoeia, the technical scientific name of animals and plants. Like italics or boldface in Western languages, katakana is used to create emphasis in a sentence.à In literature, katakana script can replace kanji or hiragana in order to emphasize a characters accent. For instance, if a foreigner or, like in manga, a robot is speaking in Japanese, their speech is often written in katakana. Now that you know what katakana is used for, you can learn how to write katakana script with these numbered stroke guides. General Tips If you want to learn Japanese writing, start with hiragana and katakana. Once you are comfortable with those two scripts, then you can begin to learn kanji. Hiragana and katakana are simpler thanà kanji,à and have only 46 characters each. It is possible to write an entire Japanese sentence in hiragana. Many childrens books are written in hiragana only, and Japanese children start to read and write in hiragana before making an attempt to learn some of the two thousand kanji commonly used. Like most Asian languages, Japanese can be written vertically or horizontally. Read more about when one should write vertically versus horizontally.

Examples of Persuasive Essays Examples of Persuasive Essays Examples of Persuasive Essays Persuasive essay writing is one of the common college works. You must remember that essay writing consists of introduction, main text and conclusion. The structure of the main body depends on what the argumentative persuasive essay topics are asking you to do. In the case of a discussion type essay, the main body should be divided into two parts: one looking at the advantages of the topic and the other looking at the disadvantages. A plan for the first example might look like this: Topic:Ã Academic qualifications are of little practical benefit in the real world. Essay Introduction: variety of different qualifications; different methods of assessment. Benefits: international standards for professions, e.g. doctors; students have chance to study latest theories; qualifications lead to better salaries and promotion. The elements of a conflict of the Soviet-Afghan war Research Paper
The elements of a conflict of the Soviet-Afghan war - Research Paper Example All types of conflicts, be they political, economical, social or ethical, have stemmed because of the occurrence of the war itself. It would be imperative, therefore, to study the causes of the war so that the basis of the conflicts can be analyzed. The Soviet occupation of the Afghan territory had a myriad of reason, including political as well as economic factors. It started with the Soviet interest in the natural mineral deposits of Afghanistan, including the huge stores of natural gas that were discovered not long before the occupation (Assifi, 1982/83). There were also hopes of finding other minerals like coal, iron, and oil (Assifi, 1982/83). Afghanistan, although a land-locked country, holds a key position geopolitically due to its placement on the map (Assifi, 1982/83). The Soviets could make their way to the Indian Ocean, and into the neighboring territories, such as Pakistan, which many believe to be next on the Sovietââ¬â¢s war list (National Review, 1987). To make matt ers easier, the Soviets had, two years prior to the official occupation, installed a pro-communist regime in the Afghan government (Assifi, 1982/83). The major players of the war were of course the USSR and the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan (Assifi, 1982/83). USSR, a communist force rising in the world against the capitalist Western giants like the United States posed a serious threat to the Western world (National Review, 1987). ... ly made their way into their homeland owing to the cooperation of the pro-communist regime installed in the country a couple of years back (Assifi, 1982/83). The population itself was divided into different sects and groups, which made the freedom fight slightly ineffective (Lamothe, 2004). The major parties that influenced the war were the Jamiat-i-Islami, Hizb-i-Islami, Mujahideen, and the Taliban (Lamothe, 2004). Individuals such as Ahmad Shah Massoud (Lamothe, 2004) also played pivotal role in the Afghan resistance against the Soviet invasion. Apart from the key players of the war, several countries took part in the resistance against the invasion although not directly becoming a part of the war. Such states are said to play a supportive role in the conflict. Pakistan was one of major supporters of the freedom fighters (Chapman, 1982). It couldnââ¬â¢t help getting involved in the war, though, given its geographical closeness to the Afghan territory. Also, it was believed that it was the next target of the Soviets (National Review, 1987), who had apparently greater aims than just occupying Afghanistan. Therefore, Pakistan fought the invasion politically and with manpower. It provided a constant supply of trained soldiers, called Mujahideen, to the Afghan freedom fighters, most of whom were Pashtun and of Afghan nationality (Lamothe, 2004). These soldiers were trained in military and religious camps all along the border of the two countries, and a huge fraction of these camps were funded by the United States government (Chapman, 1982). Pakistan, suddenly, was very prominent on the world map due to its geopolitical role in the conflict (Assifi, 1982/83). It also provided health care facilities to the wounded soldiers, both on the battlefield and on its own land among

AMERICAN LITERATURE Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
AMERICAN LITERATURE - Essay Example For this, he makes 2 rhetorical parallels: one is between some of his listeners and the wicked Israelites, and the other is between them and the narrator. The first one clarifies the Biblical metaphor of a sliding foot, that is, a state of being constantly exposed to Godââ¬â¢s anger and protected only by His ââ¬Å"meer Pleasureâ⬠(Edwards and Smolinski 5). The second one is a widely used public speaking technique: the indirect speech from the part of those people whom a speaker wants to influence. Edwards describes the arguments of the unconverted people the following way: Almost every natural Man that hears of Hell, flatters himself that he shall escape it; he depends upon himself for his own Securityâ⬠¦ every one lays out Matters in his own Mind how he shall avoid Damnation, and flatters himself that he contrives well for himself, and that his Schemes wonââ¬â¢t fail. (Edwards and Smolinski 9-10) This way, the speaker identifies with the unconverted listeners or even with all of his listeners, even the converted ones, who behave not piously enough. The identification is negative: those who ââ¬Å"are out of Christâ⬠(Edwards and Smolinski 12) are the protagonist of this narrative, and their function as a protagonist is not to be a positive example but rather to show how awful are the consequences of the absence of certain positive actions. This type of texts is widely used in Biblical narratives (Bratcher). As for the antagonist in the plot, there is a controversy that does not permit to state plainly that this is God. As Bratcher points out, God is always present in Biblical narratives as the central character. In this story, God is impersonated and shown in action: infuriated, He is holding sinners over the pit of flames. Still, this does not mean that God is seen as an equal part on the literary playground of Edwardsââ¬â¢ text. He is an objective power beyond human rich, the power that has unquestioned influence on the world around a nd has a superior capability of self-control (as God in this sermon keeps from wreaking His wrath). This status of the figure of God is in line with Enlightenment deism: for the thinkers like Samuel Clarke, John Toland, Anthony Collins, and even John Locke, Godââ¬â¢s power and will is prior to ethic systems; hence, this is Him who dictates the right behavior (Bristow). From this ethical perspective, the antagonist of unconverted human beings in ââ¬Å"Sinners in the Hands of an Angry Godâ⬠is their own liability to ââ¬Å"fall by themselvesâ⬠(Edwards and Smolinski 4), their ââ¬Å"Wickednessâ⬠(Edwards and Smolinski 7). This situation is close to inescapable, as human beings are seen as naturally inclined to wickedness. They have responsibilities, while God is not responsible for anything (Edwards and Smolinski 9). The only way to influence this terrible condition, that is, to become a part of agreement with God (thereby attaining at least some promises from Him) is to accept the existence of Christ as an embodiment of ââ¬Å"the Promises of the Covenant of Graceâ⬠(Edwards and Smolinski 11). ââ¬Å"Sinners in the Hands of an Angry Godâ⬠is also a refined argument; alongside the powerful metaphoric pattern, it has a list of reasons that have to prove that non-Christians really have no alternative. Two Enlightenment trends of the sermon have already been mentioned. One is its deism: for Edwards, conversion to Christianity is a natural act, the one that is justified by the world order. He frequently uses

Lord Of The Flies Vs. Huck Fin :: essays research papers
Responsibility à à à à à In todayââ¬â¢s society, human beings must learn to take care of something or someone, and that is a responsibility that they must uphold. In both the Lord of the Flies, and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the responsibility of the boys is to manage by themselves without any adults to take care of them. The events in William Goldingââ¬â¢s book Lord of the Flies can be easily compared to those of Mark Twainââ¬â¢s book, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, because the main characters both have major responsibilities. There are two responsibilities that the characters came in contact with, taking care of people, including themselves, and being responsible enough to do the right thing. Thus, responsibility helps individuals to evolve and mature. à à à à à Taking care of yourself, as well as others is an enormous responsibility. In both books, the main characters must take care of themselves because they do not know who they can trust. The boys in the Lord of the Flies basically have to live their own lives, for they are on an island with no one to run to except themselves, or some of the other boys that they trust. Although, the ones they trust are already fending for themselves. The characters all go through changes as they adjust to their new world, and become different people because of it. In example to this, Jack seems like a strong willed character at the start of the book, but the other boys never would have imagined he would turn into a cold blooded killer. Therefore, they must learn to take care of themselves for they can not depend on Jack or any of the older boys, to be there for each and every one of them. It is proven that each boy has this responsibility in the following quote; à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à ââ¬Å"Merridew turned to Ralph. ââ¬ËArenââ¬â¢t there any grown-ups?ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËNo.ââ¬â¢ à à à à à à à à à à Merridew sat down on a trunk and looked round the circle. ââ¬ËThen à à à à à à à à à à weââ¬â¢ll have to look after ourselves.ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (Golding 17) à à à à à This is an immense responsibility for the boys, because they never had to live on their own before they arrived on the island. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, both Jim, the runaway nigger, and Huck choose the responsibility of taking care of themselves. This is because they both run away from the lives they had been living. à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à ââ¬Å"But looky here, Huck, who wuz it dat ââ¬Ëuz killed in dat shanty à à à à à à à à à à ef it warnââ¬â¢t you?

Reseach Workoholics Essay
Is a 40-hour work week too much? Should there be a mandatory cap on the number of hours a person can work? Should there be changes in employment laws to give Americans more relaxation time? A workaholic definition is a noun a person who compulsively works hard and long hours. But the definition in a workaholics eyes is a person who ââ¬Å"values work over any other activityâ⬠, according to careercast.com. Merriam-webster.com says itââ¬â¢s a ââ¬Å"compulsive workerâ⬠â⬠¦ (Productivity) The reasons for someone to become a workaholic are some people donââ¬â¢t feel their lives are fulfilled unless theyââ¬â¢re engaged in constructive activities. The more they work, the happier they are. Itââ¬â¢s addictive. Where in the world can they be productive and reap the rewards of their labor but at their job? Workaholics canââ¬â¢t be idle. They need to be constantly working. Proving their value Children who were raised in dysfunctional families, or by perfectionist parents, and were made to feel like their best was never good enough can grow up to be workaholics. Spending their adult lives immersed in their work is a way for them to constantly prove themselves and their worth. Escaping problems and negative feelings another reason why people become workaholics is because they lack a sense of control in their lives. They have problems at home they canââ¬â¢t fix, or they donââ¬â¢t want to deal with, for example. Being at work all the time allows them to escape painful, negative feelings. It also gives them a sense of control they canââ¬â¢t find otherwise. Adrenaline rush working non-stop provides an adrenaline rush to some people. Being extremely busy, rushing to meet unrealistic goals, and pushing themselves beyond their limits gives them that intense feeling they crave. That same adrenaline rush- the increased heart rate, the burst of energy, the heightening of their senses- comes from roller coaster rides and other thrilling activities. In 1965, a U.S. Senate subcommittee predicted that as a result of increasing labor productivity from automation and ââ¬Å"cybernationâ⬠in other words, the computer revolution. Americans would be working only about 20 hours a week by the year 2000, while taking seven weeks or more of vacation a year. By the mid-1970s, and especially after 1980, median wages werenââ¬â¢t keeping pace with increases in our capacity to produce. But flattening incomes didnââ¬â¢t derail the consumption train. Americans continued to buy more, in part by going deeper into debt, by having more members of the family enter the workforce and by working additional overtime. By the boom times of the late 1990s, Americans worked more than the notoriously workaholic Japanese. To answer the question of limiting the number of hours you can work I think we would have a happier and healthier society if we worked a little less. As of right now, some jobs require a lot of time and energy. Legalizing mandating the number of hours worked is an interesting idea. It would see a drop in stress levels, more family time and participation and healthier workers. This probably wouldnââ¬â¢t make too many people happy at first, though, and it would take some getting used to. It is a way to raise healthier families and having less levels of stress that are exhibited in really tough jobs, like ER doctors and nurses, and other highly stressful occupations. American work-life balance according to the Center for American Progress on the topic of work and family life balance, ââ¬Å"in 1960, only 20 percent of mothers worked. Today, 70 percent of American children live in households where all adults are employed.â⬠I donââ¬â¢t care who stays home and who works in terms of gender (work opportunity equality for all ââ¬â itââ¬â¢s a family choice). Either way, when all adults are working (single or with a partner), thatââ¬â¢s a huge hit to the American family and free-time in the American household. The U.S. is the ONLY country in the Americas without a national paid parental leave benefit. The average is over 12 weeks of paid leave anywhere other than Europe and over 20 weeks in Europe. Zero industrialized nations are without a mandatory option for new parents to take parental leave. That is, except for the United States. Letââ¬â¢s say someone make $60k/year. Excluding benefits, employee taxes, etc., letââ¬â¢s consider this equivalent to $30/hour. ($30/hour x 40 hours x 50 weeks = $60k). Now they want to figure out the hourly number that he/she use to decide if itââ¬â¢s worth it to do something. For example, if he/she owe a fine on something he/she donââ¬â¢t think they should owe, but itââ¬â¢s only a $5 fine, itââ¬â¢s not worth spending an hour ($30) to contest it. BUT, itââ¬â¢s not clear to me if he/she should use $30/hour for this number, because Iââ¬â¢m only working 8 hours/day. Like, if someone is willing to pay me for 40 hours/week at $30/hour, presumably he/she could get one or two more such jobs. Or should she/he divide that by 3 to get $10/hour because really for every 24 hours, theyââ¬â¢re only ââ¬Å"ableâ⬠to earn $30/hour for a third of them? Because some of these activities he/she would be doing in my off-hours (e.g., theyââ¬â¢d have to dispute that fine after work). Or is it something in between?

Inability to consider all the nuances of real world operations. Poor implementation and user unfriendly software, distrust of computer based (black box) approaches by public work personnel, unappreciated operational complexities. 4) What beneï ¬ ts were contributed by early roadway snow and ice control software? They focussed attention on savings from better routes. They recogonized the importance of savings from using a rational and analytical approach to fleet size and service level. For eg., the SnowMaster system provided a major advance in the trend towards optimization by encouraging user involvement in route design. 5) Explain the relationship between the duration of a route and the service level provided to the road segments on the route. Service level is the time limit for traversing a route. Trucks usually travel at 20 mph while servicing and 40 mph while deadheading. So, it might not be possible to satisfy a route which is very long.
